Culture and Insights

Melbourne Place Words by Donna Elizabeth Wheeler; Thoughtful, seductive architecture and fit out by Kennedy Nolan, the warmly monumental building as if always part of the city fabric (ah, masonry), rooms that are intimate, cosseting, lushly domiciliary. Hotel rooms are for skin contact after all: here everything feels good, real. The slip of the Frette sheets, the cosy drape of a towelling robe, the cool of terrazzo and the plush heft of the rugs underfoot, the solidity and palpable grain of the jarrah doors and dividers. A rare attention to aspect (the room’s palette dependant on the direction each faces), beautiful, all Australian furniture design, some good contemporary art choices, a complimentary minibar, the woody fragrance - twigs, black tea, tea chests? - filling the lobby and following you up in the lift, the beautifully branded merch (totes, luggage tags, card holders). Nice consistency of vision and execution (a surprisingly rare thing). Yes, please, would stay again. ✍️ @donnaelizabethwheeler 📸 @smartanson @melbourneplace
